“You are the light of the world A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a basket, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 4:14-16)
Notice, Jesus doesn’t say “Be the light of the world”. He says, “You ARE the light of the world”. Christ has already taken you out of darkness and into his glorious light – 1 Peter 2:9 and Ephesians 5:8.
The effect of Christ bring you into His light is a complete and total transformation of IDENTITY. You no longer belong to the darkness, you have BECOME light. His light not only shines through you, it has become your identity.
What does it look like? “Your good works”. The light you shine is the life you live. It should look different than it did when you were in darkness. The light of Christ transforms the way your life is lived.
Light is also meant to be SEEN. “That they may SEE your good works, and glorify your Father”. The shining of your light results in glory to God. Others will glorify Him and you will glorify Him through the shining of your light.
Notice, this verse is in the context of Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
Not all men will glorify God. Some will persecute you for your light – and that is reason for rejoicing. Don’t hide your light – your reward is great.
